Out here, the wide-open prairies, river valleys, and rugged badlands provide habitat for an incredible variety of wildlife. Visitors may spot pronghorn racing across the grasslands, mule and white-tailed deer grazing in coulees, or coyotes and foxes trotting along the horizon. Birds of prey like bald eagles, golden eagles, and ospreys soar overhead, while river otters and great blue herons thrive along the Yellowstone and Tongue rivers. Keep your eyes open—you never know what you’ll discover while exploring Southeast Montana.
Note: A conservation license is required for everyone age 12 and older to access most state lands, including wildlife management areas, fishing access sites and wildlife habitat protection areas, and all types of recreation—launching watercraft, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, etc. State parks are excluded from this requirement.
